WHITE PAPER
Tools To Be Proactive: SNMP Traps
Administrators often become aware of failed systems through user complaints. By the time
complaints occur, however, business has already been impacted. It would be a wonderful world if
administrators could respond to system failures before they have impacted the user community.
SNMP traps are tools for administrators to take proactive measures.
Console management appliances such as the CCM Console Manager typically include a SNMP agent.
The agent allows SNMP managers to view standard MIB variables, such as MIB-2. For the most part,
these variables provide status and statistical usage information. Some appliances offer an enterprise
MIB, which include unique value-added capabilities. The enterprise trap MIB, when compiled by a
third-party SNMP management system such as HP Openview, Tivoli Enterprise Manager, or BMC
Patrol, allows the manager to display trap information in a human readable form.
The CCM Console Manager 'port alert' trap, mentioned in the previous section, allows administrators
to specify ten unique text strings per serial port that the CCM appliance will scan inbound data for.
Buffering and scanning occurs at all times, even when the port is not being accessed via a Telnet or
SSH session.
Feature Description/Benefit
Some RADIUS servers, such as SecurID servers, may be used
to enforce multi-factor authentication. SecurID combines user-
defined text and real-time passcode information into a one-time-
use password.
RADIUS servers may also be used to enforce password strength
and timeout restrictions.
The CCM appliance serial console (dumb terminal or
HyperTerminal) sessions must authenticate in the same manner
as network-based sessions.
The CCM appliance dial-in sessions must authenticate in the
same manner as network-based sessions.
The Avocent Telnet client supports file-based session logging.
Session logging may be dynamically started or it may be
configured per each server to start automatically, if desired.
Session logs may be stored on a network server in a user-
defined directory. File names contain the date and time of the
serial session.
Serial over IP sessions make it possible to place servers into a
glass room that locked and secured. Physical access to servers
may be totally controlled and monitored.
